Dear New Day Academy Boarding & Day School Students, Staff, Parents and Community Members:
New Day Academy Boarding and Day School has selected Jamila J. Smith as its new Superintendent and Headmaster, succeeding Terrance Walton as of late-December of 2018. Mrs. Smith served in administration for both public and charter schools within the Cleveland Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana. Her opportunity to serve in diverse roles of education, development, programming and funding have prepared her to lead New Day Academy.
Mrs. Smith most recently served as Director of Dropout Recovery High Schools within the Cleveland area. At New Day Academy Boarding and Day School Mrs. Smith will continue to focus on the growth and impact of learning on the students within her building. She believes that every student deserves a quality education to attain the skills necessary to thrive today. Mrs. Smith has a plan to enhance creative collaborations with a variety of business, schools ‘and nonprofit partners in order to strengthen our academics. This enhancement will allow for student identified career pathway, industry credential opportunities and overall employability skills.
Jamila Smith, a native of Syracuse New York, is the daughter of two educators. Her mother was the first African-American elected to the local school board and father is a seasoned teacher and president of a restorative justice program serving school aged youth. Mrs. Smith performed as a student athlete on the women’s track team and graduated from Miami University located in Oxford, Ohio. During her college career at Miami University Jamila Smith met her husband. Smith and her husband reside in Kent with their two children.
Since the beginning of Mrs. Smith’s tenure with New Day Academy Boarding and Day School in late-December 2018 she has been building structures and supports for our students. Mrs. Smith is working closely with the New Day Academy Boarding and Day School team and newly appointed governing boarding to ensure our school continues to be a safe place where students are engaged in learning and encouraged to have fun.
Mrs. Jamila Smith is both honored and excited to have been selected as New Day Academy’s Superintendent. She is looking forward to meeting with each and every student to establishing an individual plan for success.
